This is where we keep the record: the architecture, the rituals, and the people who carry each tradition forward.
From the sentō of Tokyo to the smoke saunas of Estonia's Võromaa, from Siwa's desert oasis springs to the banyas of St. Petersburg — the practices differ by continent, climate, and century, but the impulse that built them is the same.
Bathing Cultures
From the sentō of Tokyo to the smoke saunas of Estonia's Võromaa, from Siwa's desert oasis springs to the banyas of St. Petersburg — the practices differ by continent, climate, and century, but the impulse that built them is the same. This is where we keep the record: the architecture, the rituals, and the people who carry each tradition forward.

Bali, Lumeira, Indonesia
From the sentō and onsen of Japan to the jjimjilbang of South Korea and the hammams of Uzbekistan, Asia holds some of the oldest continuous bathing cultures on earth. We've followed steam through Tokyo bathhouses like Takara Yu and Mikoku Yu, hot sand baths at Ibusuki Hakusuikan, the underground limestone caverns of Bungo-Ono, and the centuries-old mushiyu steam rooms of Beppu's Kannawa district — places where the tradition has changed least where it matters most.
Health & Benefits
For centuries, sauna bathing has been bound up with how cultures care for the body — long before anyone called it a wellness routine. In Finland, löyly, the steam released when water meets hot stones, is treated as something close to sacred. In Kusatsu, Japan, the Yumori monitors mineral flow and temperature around the clock, a role built entirely around the idea that water, used correctly, restores. In Beppu, bathers have laid on geothermally heated Sekisho herbs for seven hundred years, trusting a practice that long predates any clinical explanation for why it works.
Heat has been linked to circulation, recovery, and a kind of calm that's hard to manufacture any other way — and the traditions we document treat that knowledge as lived experience, tested across generations, not packaged for a market. The venik used in Russian and Georgian banyas, the cold-plunge cycles practiced in Finnish lakeside saunas, the volcanic mud of Akhtala in Georgia — each carries its own accumulated understanding of what the body needs and when.
We share what practitioners, elders, and the cultures themselves have observed. This is documentary, not medical guidance — for anything specific to your own health, talk to a doctor who knows your history. What we can offer is the record: what these traditions have noticed, tested, and trusted, long before the research caught up.
Safety & Protocols
Every bathing culture we've filmed has its own protocols — earned the hard way, over centuries, by people who understood the body's limits better than any sign on a wall. At Kusatsu's hot springs, water so mineral-rich it would scald is cooled through a traditional wooden conduit system before it ever reaches a bather. In Finland, the cycle between a 100°C sauna and a near-freezing lake is treated as a discipline, not a dare — something built up to, round by round. In the Netherlands, Germany, and Italy, the Aufguss ritual is paced deliberately, with cold plunges built into the structure of the visit itself, not left to chance.
Heat is not casual. Cold plunges are not casual. The traditions that have lasted are the ones that respect that — knowing how long to stay in, when to leave, and what the body is telling you before it has to ask twice.
This is observed practice, not a substitute for medical advice — if you have a health condition, check with a doctor before you sit down in the heat. The rest is what the traditions themselves have taught us.
